Renowned New Zealand winery, Montana, launches M by Montana, paying homage to its rich winemaking tradition during the 50th anniversary year of the first vine plantings in Marlborough – its home.

M by Montana is the new pinnacle range, and is crafted to impress with a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Gris, alongside a Gisborne Chardonnay and Waipara Pinot Noir.

Chief Winemaker Jamie Marfell has crafted wines that take uniquely New Zealand wine flavours, traditions, and terroirs to new heights. Steeped in heritage yet constructed for the modern palate, M by Montana brings to life a bolder flavour profile and more premium expression of New Zealand terroir.

“I set out to produce an exceptional range of wines that do honour the incredible vineyards we have to work with, and I feel that we’ve really achieved something special with M by Montana,” Jamie said.

“We wanted to express a modern style of bold wines that we know contemporary Kiwi wine drinkers enjoy, while still paying homage to Montana’s rich heritage. It’s such an honour to be celebrating 50 years of the first plantings this year and I feel so lucky to get to work on these wines day-to-day.”

The M by Montana 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is alive with tropical aromas of passionfruit and stone fruit, and notes of citrus, elderflower, and tomato leaf undertones. The palate is crisp, zesty, and refreshing. An outstanding citrusy concentration, with underlying minerality on the midpalate leads to a lively, dry finish.

Also hailing from Marlborough, the 2022 Pinot Gris is vibrant, showcasing the acidity and freshness the region is renowned for. It jumps out of the glass with intense perfumed aromas of pear, guava, and rockmelon, alongside notes of honey, white flowers with a hint of spice.

The M by Montana 2022 Pinot Noir delivers the boldness of its counterparts in the range, with a powerful fruity expression of the variety. Sourced from grapes grown in the small, diverse Waipara region. Most fruit for this wine is selected from the Omihi vineyard with some contribution from the Camshorn vineyard, both of which are sheltered from the cool Easterly winds.

Full bodied and buttery, the 2022 Chardonnay embodies the richness, ripeness, and depth of fruit from the Gisborne region. Sourced from Patutahi and Manutuke sub regions, it combines the best attributes of both creating a wine with good texture and body, with fine aromatics.

The next few years will continue to bring into focus the Marlborough wine story, with 2025 being 50 years since the first Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir plantings, and then later in 2029 it will be 50 years when the region took its wonderful wine to the world.

M by Montana is available in leading New Zealand Grocery and Retail stores nationally for a RRP $19.99.

About Montana

Montana is one of New Zealand’s oldest and largest wineries. Founded by Ivan and Amanda Yukich, Croatian immigrants who first planted vines in 1934 in Titirangi, situated in the Waitakere Ranges west of Auckland. The Yukich’s first sold wine in 1944 before their sons, Mate and Frank, established Montana Wines later in 1961. Today, the heritage of the vines and the legacy of Montana continues to also be celebrated under the Brancott Estate brand.
