The Unspoken Promise honours Hugo Gramp’s best friend Rudi Buring who, following Hugo’s untimely passing, promised to take care of his son Colin Gramp. Tragically, Hugo Gramp passed away aged 43 with two fellow leaders of the Australian wine industry, in the Kyeema Air disaster 80 years ago.
Now 97 years old, Colin says: “I can remember the day of (my father’s) funeral, Rudi introduced himself to me and said, ‘Colin, I’m here to look after you’, and he certainly did. I felt I got on so well with him because he reminded me of Dad.”
Colin went on to consider Rudi as a mentor, guardian and dear friend.
The majority of the fruit selected for this limited-edition wine came from a vineyard in the Greenock area of the Barossa Valley, which delivers Cabernet Sauvignon of concentration while retaining freshness. Small portions from other Barossa vineyards have been utilised to add further layers of flavour and texture to the wine.
The Unspoken Promise is a complex wine with revealing layers of aroma and flavour that speak to its quality. The aroma is filled with fresh dark berry fruit, complemented by notes of sweet toasted oak. On the palate it is a balance of ripe forest fruits and rich dark chocolate, supported by supple tannin and acid. The influence of oak is elegant, as it integrates seamlessly in the final wine to add layers of complexity on the palate.
St Hugo Chief Winemaker Dan Swincer says: “The 2014 vintage in the Barossa resulted in low yields but produced grapes of freshness and concentration, and it’s these attributes in the fruit that have helped to craft a wine with the ability to be cellared up until 2030.
“It’s an honour to create the wines for the St Hugo Legacy Collection knowing they are part of a 10-year program of releases that mark the incredible stories of father and son, Hugo and Colin Gramp.”
